Opportunistic Routing Protocols in Underwater Sensor Networks:
Challenges and Future Directions
ABSTRACT: Underwater Sensor Networks has emerged as one of the most popular researched areas in the networking field due to their numerous applications in ocean exploration, underwater surveillance, pollution detection, submarine tracking and disaster prevention. With unique characteristics such as higher delay in transmission, dynamic nodes, limited storage and battery, the most important challenge for researchers is in efficient routing of data packets from the source to the destination nodes. The recently proposed Opportunistic Routing technique has emerged as the most efficient solution to this problem. Opportunistic Routing utilizes the reception of the same broadcasted packet at multiple neighboring nodes in the network and selects one best forwarder node dynamically from the set of multiple receivers based on some unique metric. This talk discusses the working and behavior of the latest opportunistic routing protocols proposed for Underwater Sensor Networks and presents the challenges and future research directions.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Varun G Menon is currently Associate Professor in Department of Computer Science and Engineering, SCMS School of Engineering and Technology and Head of International Partnerships at SCMS Group of Educational Institutions, India. He is also Distinguished Speaker at Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). He is currently the Guest Editor for The Journal of Supercomputing, Springer. Dr. Varun G Menon is currently serving in the Review Boards of many High Impact Factor Journals including IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Communications Magazine, Ad Hoc Networks Journal – Elsevier, Computer Communications Journal – Elsevier, Vehicular Communications Journal – Elsevier, International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks – Sage, International Journal of Communication Systems – Wiley, Ad Hoc & Sensor Wireless Networks Journal, Old City Publishing etc. Dr. Varun G Menon is also currently serving in the Editorial Review Boards of 5 journals including the Journal of Organizational and End User Computing with Impact Factor 0.759, International Journal of E-Health and Medical Communications, International Journal of Disaster Response and Emergency Management etc. He has published more than 35 research papers in high impact peer reviewed International Journals and Conferences. He has also served in the Technical Program Committee and Organizing Committee of many prestigious International Conferences organized in various countries like Thailand, USA, Hong Kong, Vietnam etc.
Dr. Varun G Menon is currently heading the collaborative projects for SCMS Group with some of the top universities in the world that include Derby University UK, EARTH University Costa Rica, Shimane University Japan, University of Economics Japan, Technical University of Varna Bulgaria, FPT University Vietnam, Hung Kung University Taiwan etc. Dr Varun G Menon has completed his PhD in Computer Science and Engineering and holds a M. Tech degree in Computer and Communication. He also has a Master’s Degree in Applied Psychology, an MBA in Human Resource Management and a Diploma in Training and Development (Dip. T. D.). He is also a Life Skills Trainer and has completed more than 200 training sessions for faculty and students in various professional colleges in India. He has been doing many workshops on “Quality Research Publishing” in various Engineering Colleges in India to enhance the quality of research publishing among the faculty and students.
