Title: Offshore energy systems: how innovation and integration are enabling the green shift
Abstract:
As the energy transition is becoming an urgent priority of the international community and Europe has already set the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, there is the need to re-think completely the way we generate, transmit and consume energy, and no domain or application can be left aside. In this context, offshore energy systems will have a significant role in the energy shift. This is not only due to the growing importance of ocean renewables, but also to the fact the offshore space hosts energy-intensive and technology-driven industrial applications that are now evolving towards electrification and digitalization to display a smarter and more sustainable energy paradigm.
Moreover, a systematic, large-scale, integration of offshore renewables, loads and storage systems with the onshore power network could make them crucial assets in the implementation of the trans-national “Super Grid”, provided that new design and operation procedures can overcome the uncoordinated approach typical of the first offshore deployments.
This talk will discuss the opportunities, peculiarities and challenges offered by offshore grids. It will highlight how the lessons learned from onshore electric networks on the central role of power electronics and real-time information exchange can be enhanced to generate innovative design, operational and control approaches needed to cope with the demanding environmental and operational conditions of isolated and grid-connected offshore systems.
