Title: Laying the foundations of 6G mobile communication networks

 Abstract:

The 5th generation mobile communication systems (5G) is currently at its final stage of standrdisation by 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project).  Very impressive commercial deployments in the UK, USA, Korea and China are already ongoing and we expect a ramp-up of global deployment in 2020.

Besides offering much faster mobile broadband.  5G is expected support  wireless and mobile connectivity for "vertical"  sectors,  such automotive, manufacturing, health etc. Furthermore, visions and research towards "6G"   have already  started to  emerge in industry and academia, with an expectation that  6G systems may be deployed from 2030 onwards. In this talk I will give an overview of where we are with 5G standards, spectrum and international deployment, and will then follow this up with describing a number of radio and core technologies that are expected to play a key role towards 6G. I will finish my talk by sharing a few examples of our ongoing research in this direction, as well as highlighting some recent work in 5G and IoT for next generation health and care systems.

Short Biography:

Maziar Nekovee is a Professor and Head of Centre for Advanced Communications, Mobile Technology and IoT at University of Sussex, UK. He is also Vice Chair of NetWorld 2020 European Technology Platform and is on the steering board of the UKRI-funded CommNet2 research collaboration network. His current research focuses on the applications of 5G and IoT in the health and automotive sectors, millimetre-wave and THz communication for beyond-5G/6G and the application of artificial intelligence to design and automation of mobile networks.  Prior to joining U. Sussex in 2017, he was Head of Samsung's European research and collaboration in 5G, where he developed new radio access technologies operating in millimetre-wave bands, which were subsequently implemented in the 5G New Radio  (5G NR) industry standard by 3GPP. He also played a leading role in developing and implementing the EU's  £1.1 billion  5G Public Private Partnership (5G PPP)  research and innovation program. Prior to Samsung he was with BT Research and Innovation where he worked on a range of  fixed and wireless technologies, including cognitive radio/dynamic spectrum sharing,  WiFi-based V2X, and gossip/epidemic protocols for reliable multicast communication. Maziar is the author of 100+ papers, 15 patents and one book. He has a PhD in Physics and a first degree in EEE, both from the Netherlands
