Title: Machine-to-Machine Communications: 5G and Beyond

Abstract: Next generation 5G wireless solutions need to meet the anticipated demands of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications with the total number of devices expected to be about 20 billion in 2023 according to Ericsson Mobility Report. Including M2M in such an architecture designed for human communication requires building novel architectures for the efficient and secure collection of the M2M device data, and integrating networking, distributed computing and caching for the processing of these data while addressing the close interaction of wireless networking and control systems. In this talk, first, two novel architectures for the efficient and secure collection of M2M device data will be introduced. The first one is intra-vehicular energy harvesting wireless network, where the data and power wires of the sensors within the vehicle are eliminated via the use of wireless communication and energy harvesting technologies, enabling an open architecture to accommodate new sensors, offering the potential for growth in automotive applications. The second novel architecture is visible light communication-based hybrid vehicular networking, in which the light directivity and impermeability of the optical signal through vehicles and obstacles are exploited for more secure inter-vehicular data transmission. Once the data of the M2M devices are collected in an efficient and secure manner, the next step is the systematic processing, storage and analysis of these data through the investigation of the tight interaction of communication systems and control systems. On the communication side, novel resource allocation strategies are provided, meeting the strict delay and reliability requirements of the control systems interpreting these data. On the control system side, distributed/federated machine learning techniques are developed exploiting the local processing capabilities of the M2M devices, with the goal of reducing the transmission overhead and achieving privacy.
